What does our summer look like?
Each of our twelve theme weeks are intentionally designed to encourage outdoor experiences and connection to the environment around us. As Alaskans, we are lucky to be in a place where our greatest teaching resource is merely steps outside the backdoor. Our Alaska-themed activities and projects will deliver a hands on, fun, and lasting learning experience that your child will remember.
Week 1: Wildlife Friend Fun
Moose, wolves, and bears, oh my! For our first week of camp, we will focus on Alaska’s creatures, big and small, predatory or herbivorous. We will learn and practice wildlife safety skills, and understand each animal’s important part in our vast ecosystem. We will have a zoo visit, and a bear safety lesson.
Week 2: Outdoor Alaska Skills
Alaska is home to some of the most beautiful natural vistas in the world, and many cannot be reached by road. This week we will learn about the methods and skills like orienteering and geocaching to navigate the Alaskan wilderness. We will learn about Alaska’s changing weather from a local meteorologist, and practice water safety skills.
Week 3: Trail Life
From Flattop to Turnagain, Campbell Creek to Eagle River, through Anchorage’s trails travel commuters, tourists, families and critters. This week we will learn to respectfully and safely engage with Anchorage’s vast trail system, which crisscrosses areas both urban and natural. We will have visits from advocates for Anchorage’s trails, and explore the trails ourselves!
Week 4: Bike with Buddies
Our urban ecosystem is just as important and interesting as our natural one. Join us as we explore the unique city we call home by bike, with buses, and on foot. We will practice bike safety and skills. We will have a visit from an audiologist to teach us about the importance of being alert while biking. We will use local trail maps to create and take an excursion on our nationally ranked bicycle trail system!
Week 5: Recycle with Purpose
This week, we will ponder the practical side of trash. Our upcycling activities will encourage your child to think critically and creatively about the mess we make, and how we can all reduce, reuse, and recycle. As JEC gets greener, we will give you and your child the knowledge to go green at home and throughout the community.
Week 6: Practicing Horticulture
We are surrounded by diverse and beautiful flora, from flowers to fungi to tall trees. From taiga to tundra to snowy peaks, each of Alaska’s biomes is a flourishing example of the power of nature and adaptation. We'll explore them all and visit with a local horticulturist to discuss native and cultivated species with JEC's onsite Farm-to-Table program.
Week 7: Campsite Creations
Camping is a vital part of many Alaskan children's summer experiences. We'll learn fire safety, shelter building and plenty more. We will even have our own daytime camping party with tents, songs, and of course favorite campsite meals! The skills your child will learn this week will follow them through many summers to come.
Week 8: Fish Finders
Under the water, in the ocean, lakes, and rivers, is a whole other world for your child to explore. This week, we tackle fish. We will explore the history and culture of fishing, its vital role in the Alaskan life, and the biology of ocean life. We will be fishing using old and new techniques, and practicing safe and ethical ways of fishing.
Week 9: Take a Hike
We're not being mean, we're going to get outdoors! You don't need to be a master mountain climber to get far in Alaska. Many incredible peaks are right in our backyards. Mount Baldy and Flattop are just two examples of exciting starter peaks to master together. We’ll be joined by a geologist who will give us a whole new lens to appreciate the hills we call home.
Week 10: Backyard Foraging
There is so much to enjoy and notice in our backyard. This week we will talk about the edible plants that exist all over Anchorage. You have heard of rhubarb and blueberries, but what about the fiddleheads and spruce tips? Did you know you can munch chickweed and dandelion too? This week we will learn to identify the myriad of useful flora that exists around town. We will learn how to safely identify, harvest, and prepare foraged foods. We will end the week with a foraged meal to share with families!
Week 11: Aviation Adventures
Planes, trains, and automobiles. When so much of the state is inaccessible by road, how do we get around? Planes are an integral part of the lives of many Alaskans, and even for us who can't fly are ourselves, we can be fascinated by planes. We will learn how they work and what they do, with the help of a pilot. We’ll build and fly our own miniature planes to learn how they escape the pull of gravity.
Week 12: Water Works
Water is all around us, in the earth, in the sky, in our bodies. We know that without water life is impossible. For our final week of school-age camp, we will explore the power of the water cycle, and what it means for earth, ourselves and beyond. Join us this week as we learn about water science and enjoy a water-ful field day for the last day of camp!
Week 13: KINDY CAMP (for rising kindergartners only)
This week will assist your preschooler through the transition from preschool to a kindergarten classroom.
